The Lower East Bar hop.

First off, it has been a crazy semester for the both of us, a lot has happened and so the crazy life of college has consumed the both of us. That being said, this past week was the first time in a long time that I have even been to a new bar let alone have time to write about it. This past week I found the time to go out for a friend's birthday. We decided to do some good old fashioned cheap bar hopping, well sortof...

Here is a condensed review of the night.

After a few drinks at my apartment we met friends at:
Elsa
217 E. 3rd St
(between Ave B and Ave C)
located in the East Village

Why we love it: The entire menu consists of cleverly named drinks which include the Invitation to a Beheading, Cortez the Killer and Sunset city. We all got different drinks and tasted each others' . My personal favorite was the Cucumber infused drink that I can't for the life of me remember the name... S.J. Jenkins something or other delicious. Also the very cozy atmosphere was a great way to start off a night with friends. Half of the fun of drinking here was deciding which of their cocktails fit my taste best as they have a wide variety from fruity to spicy. It also didn't hurt that the waiters were not ugly and neither was the decor inspired by a 1920's somewhat deco style with a hipster twist. However this place is not for the cheap. Expect to spend at least $10 per drink, and they are on the smaller side. Totally delicious, but not for the cheap of heart.

When we decided to leave the trendy Elsa, we trucked it through the cold around the corner to another bar.

Max Fish
178 Ludlow Street

(Act 1 Scene 2)
Welcome to your typical dive bar. Outside was your usual herd of smokers and the bouncer checking ID's. Once we got into this long narrow bar, I quickly realized that we were no longer in the hipster bar scene we had just left. The entire bar was packed, most likely way over the capacity limit. That is partly what made the experience so much fun. Squeezing your way past everyone to get to the bar and rolling your eyes at the 5 people actually sitting down and taking up way more space than anyone else. Getting a drink puts you back about $3-$5 a beer depending on what your poison is. We made our way to the back in search of space to breathe and somehow got lucky enough to find an open booth.

Why we love it: From the cheap drinks, and all the poor college and young professionals, this place screams fun. The pool table constantly has a game going on, and the players have to ask other patrons to move so they can make the big money shot and impress the girl on the other side of the table in hopes of not going home alone. The walls are splattered with a few pictures and wall paintings of seemingly random song lyrics. It was a really interesting experience and a fun cheap bar. I'm glad I got dragged to a bar with so much character
(The night was only made better with a trip to the famous Katz's Deli right on the corner where the friendly banter with the workers and free beer make up for the over priced sandwich a friend got.)

Perhaps we will share the rest of the night another time. Its time to go. Until next drunken story...

An every thursday kind of place

Name: VIG 27

Address: 119 East 27th Street

Website: http://www.vig27.com

Why we love it: VIG 27, (Not The Vig Bar) is one of the most exciting lounges to be at in the east side. This chic bar with an outdoor patio is outfitted with a few tables, some comfortable seating, and beautiful east side men. This low key environment with very friendly staff, is home to different events every week which allows me to say one of the best features of the bar is the back room. The famed back room of an establishment, esp a gay establishment has a certain dirty association with it. This is not one of those places. Vig27's back room is a cozy, intimate place with up and coming gay artists' work on the walls. A beautiful fireplace in the corner with candles contribute the the mood. The back room can also be converted into a performance space which is one of the major players for loving it.
Meaner, Harder, Leather!

Every Thursday night at around midnight is the backroom variety show. Hosted by Misty Meaner, Go-Go Harder, and Stormy Leather, Meaner Harder Leather is one of the most interesting and entertaining shows in New York. Drag, burlesque, and boylesque are the staples of the evening show with the occasional contortionist, singer, juggler, or pole dancer making an appearance. The no cover show guarantees to be an unforgettable evening, well I suppose that depends on how much you have to drink. The $6 margaritas, or the specialty drinks are great for that whole drinking part.

What we recommend: You Must go on a Thursday night and see this show at least once. The $6 margaritas, and drink specials make it hard to stay away. The margarita flavors include, strong and delicious raspberry (personal favorite), strawberry, blueberry, and regular. There may be others but just haven't gotten the chance to try them yet. And maybe while you are there, pick up a cute boy that you probably could bring home to mother, just leave out the part about meeting him at a burlesque show.

A sad disappointment with a happy ending

Name: Coyote Ugly

Address: 153 First Ave between 9th and 10th Street

Website: http://www.coyoteuglysaloon.com/newyork/

Well its sad to say I can not do a why we love it section this time. I can only declare that i moderately enjoyed the place, and this is only because of the people I was with and not the place itself. Coyote Ugly is nothing special. It is a tiny place with one TV and bathrooms I would only recommend using if your not opposed to catching various diseases I'm sure were colonizing there. The bartenders were very nice and alot of fun, mostly because they were trashed. However, they were not very attractive. I was expecting much hotter girls given its reputation and the fact it was a Saturday night. They do dance on the bar and have choreographed dances to certain songs. The only entertainment this bar provides is the fact that any girl in there is allowed to dance on the bar and in exchange she gets a free shot. However, after the fourth drunken, rythemless, bachelorette party got up on bar this no longer was entertaining and crossed over to me being embarrassed for them.
I think now the question is would i recommend to visit this bar... I feel that everything should be tried once. People like different things and someone might love this spot. But i would strongly recommend having a backup plan.

And now for the happy ending!

After a few hours of drinking, hunger kicked in and my friend brought me to the most delicious french fry place I have ever encountered!

Name:
Pommes Frites

Address: 123 Second Ave between St Marks and 7th Street

Website: http://www.pommesfrites.ws/

Why we love it! Big Hot Crispy French Fries with tons of dipping sauces and very cheap prices. I don't need to say anything else. They are a must try!

What we recommend: Parmesan Peppercorn and Horseradish Mayo

My Two Loves

Name: Doghouse Saloon NYC

Address: 152 Orchard Street

Website: www.doghousesaloonnyc.com

Why we love it: I have very few loves in life. One is alcohol, one is video games, and the last is Chipotle (but that has nothing to do with this post). The first two however are the reasons why i wish i could legally marry this place. I went to the Doghouse about two weeks after it had opened on a Wednesday night with a few friends, the bar was pretty empty, only about 20 people, but it ended up being one of the most fun nights i had had in a while. When I arrived, the first thing I noticed was the rockband set set-up in front of a huge projection screen and street fighter 4 set-up on another television. From this alone I knew it was going to be a great night. After a few drinks (Specials available everyday) we decided it was rockband time. After a few more drinks I broke out in a drunken rendition which could vaguely be recognized as Bon Jovi's Dead or Alive. I figured after this i had to ban myself from any further public humiliation and retreated back to the bar to watch baseball on their numerous flat screens around the room. I argued with the bartender over the Yankees and Mets, and played their famous "Wheel of Shots", which is a huge spinning wheel with prizes ranging from water to jello shots to bombs and well shots. The wheel also contains a bartenders choice, which after the bartender found out my hatred for whiskey, poured me a shot of Jack Daniels. It's $5 per spin and worth playing at least once, and don't worry the bartenders will rarely actually give you a shot of water. This is all only on the first floor of the bar. On the second level, their game room, a pool table, skee-ball and buck hunt can be found along with some booths to lounge at. Various beer pong tables are also scattered around on both levels of the bar. All in all this bar has the total package, geared toward college students something can be found here for everyone.

What we recommend: Whatever is the special that night. Ranges from .25 cent Bud Light Drafts on Sundays to $4 Coronas on Thursdays.
Spin on the "Wheel of Shots"- $5
Signature Dirrrty Dog Shot- $3

Fun Events: *I'm sad to announce that video game Wednesdays are no more however I still highly recommend checking out the Doghouse Saloon*
Wednesday Trivia - Prizes include lots of free drinks and the grand prize is $50 off your bar tab
Live band karaoke Thursdays- Sing your favorite songs with a live band backing you up.

All the beautiful people

Name: The Bar at the Jane Hotel

Address: 113 Jane Street

Website:
www.thejanenyc.com

Why We Love it: This bar is part of the Jane Hotel which rests on the west end of Greenwhich village. Let's start with the Hotel, which was built in the early 20th century and has a very rich history involving the Titanic. It also has been know to serve some very well known clients. Standing outside with a friend we very quickly felt slightly under dressed. we couldn't help but notice all of the beautiful people. The doorman held the door for us and we ended up in a beautiful antique hotel.
Now lets talk bar.IDs checked at the door and I felt like an A-lister, did I simply know the right people to get in? The bar, as antique as the rest of the hotel, was packed with young beautiful people. There also is a ballroom fully decorated with a fireplace, couches, an antique massive disco ball, portraits, two stuffed peacocks and a stuffed ram on the mantle, yes a ram, I know you are speechless. Don't let the amazing decor (not being sarcastic) fool you this place knows how to party. It felt like a group of teens crashing grandpa's den, but replace the teens with beautiful people in their 20's and grandpa's den with a ballroom/loungs. Although the music was usually reminding me of my youth, or songs from my parents generation it was never hard to get your dancing shoes on and occasionally dance or sing like a fool to "Ain't no moutain high enough." A few drinks later and suddenly it is 4.30 and last call... some nights just fly by.

What we recommend: Unfortunately, there isn't a lot to say about what the drinks in hand were or how much they cost. A friend kept handing me whatever he felt like getting. All that can be said is that they were good. The bartenders know how to make the drinks delicious, not too strong but still a slight flavor of the booze. Go wild and try something new. However the last drink I had was a full glass of Patron silver... that was a surprise!

oh did I mention the beautiful people?

Who doesn't love some beer pong?

Name: Off The Wagon

Address: 109 Macdougal Street

Website: http://www.nycbestbar.com/off/

Why we love it: After drinking at a first bar one night, a friend dragged me all the way across town to go to this bar. The entire walk there I was pissed that I was forced to leave a perfectly good bar and quickly sobering up, a feeling I should only be going through in my sleep. However, as soon as I got to the door I fell in love. Upon entering I was stunned by the massive bar, tons of TV's around and a huge 200" TV all showing different sports games. I was then taken to the upstairs loft where a smaller bar and two beer pong tables were overflowed with drunk college guys fighting over whether one of the guys had interfered in the throw. Having not played beer pong in months I could not wait to get on a table. Thankfully it didn't take too long at all. I went up to a table asked who was next and said I wanted to play after. Surprisingly there were no arguments or long sign up sheets to write my name on and then wait for another three hours. It was my team's turn up on the table so I went to the bar to get a pitcher and was absolutely shocked when a pitcher, cups, and ping pong balls only cost me $8. Obviously my team won a few rounds but for $8 a pitcher it was completely worth it. A few hours of beer pong and heavy drinking later I realized I was starving! Thankfully the bar has a menu full of food any level of drunk person craves. This was only the first of many frequent visits to this place- whether you're going there for happy hour and a baseball game or a night your liver will hate you for, this is definitely a place anyone can enjoy.

What we recommend: Bacon egg and cheese sliders- 4 for $8
Mozzarella Sticks- $5.95
Any pitcher of beer (You can never go wrong with beer) to go with the game of beer pong you must play if visiting this place- Price varies depending on daily special

Fun Events: Cheap specials every day of the week ranging from $1 drafts, $8-11 pitchers, to $2 drinks for ladies every Wednesday. All specials can be found on their website.

Another Latin Gem

Name: La Pregunta

Address: 1528 Amsterdam Avenue between 135th and 136th st

Website: www.lapregunta.net

Why we love it: La Pregunta feeds the artist inside all of us. Everything about it feels like a true artist escape. The mix matched mosaic tables and the comfortable couches are prime locations for conversation as contemplative or trivial as you chose. There is usually a painter's politically driven collection hanging on the wall and a few musicians or poets adding to the atmosphere. This arts cafe is often the host of various college events to meet up with a few friends and listen to some sweet jams. Have a good sandwich or drink, relax and maybe even get to know the saxophone player and his sweet girlfriend who is into extreme sports and getting tattoos at the neighboring table. Don't forget to try some of their amazing desserts which will have you begging for more.

What we recommend: The Castro- $6 chicken sandwich with avocado and deliciousness, with yucca and sweet potato fries.
Guava Martini's and Sugarcane Mojitos running you about $7 give or take, and the entire dessert selection.

Fun Events: Free dance class on Wednesdays, slightly random live entertainment as well as the occasional speech from our favorite or not so favorite politicians.
